Expanding transportation service

Independent Living Services looks to expand services in the Greenbrier area with the addition of a 19-passenger, handicap accessible bus.

The new bus will allow Independent Living Services to avoid the costs associated with deploying two or more vehicles to transport our consumers if services provided in the Greenbier area continue to grow at the same rate.

The bus was made possible by the funds raised by the 5th Annual Golf Ball Drop and funds made available by the Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities formula grant program.

The purpose of the Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities formula grant program, according to the Federal Transit Administration, assists private nonprofit groups in meeting the transportation needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities when the transportation service provided is unavailable, insufficient, or inappropriate to meeting needs.

“There is no question that our consumers need effective transportation so they can be active members in our community.” Executive Director Jackie Fliss said. “Without public transportation in Faulkner County, our consumers depend onĀ our transportation fleet for transportation to medical appointments, community events, social activities, and employment and volunteer opportunities .”

“I’m extremely thankful for everyone who participated in the 5th Annual Golf Ball Drop.” Development Director Bobby Kelly said. “It’s good to see the efforts of our supporters turn into something tangible and recognizable.”
