Special Olympics Basketball practice schedule

All basketball practices will be held at Greater Pleasant Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Conway. The Area 17 Basketball Tournament will be held February 18th at 8:30am at the UCA HPER Center.

February 2nd – 4th, 2012

Transportation will leave from ILS Apartments at 10:30am on February 2nd and from Profiles Enrichment Center at 11:00am. Athletes will need about $30 for meals. We will return on Saturday, February 4th at 3:00pm.

Attire:

Numbered uniforms (coaches will provide)
Warm-up suits (blue or black if you own one)
Blue or black shorts for competition
Two outfits for non-competition events (*there will be a dance)

Please bring the following items:

Soap
Toothbrush and tooth paste
Deodorant
Shaving gear
Comb/brush

Sleepwear

Centennial Bank donates $1,500 to Independent Living Services

Independent Living Services Executive Director Jackie Fliss, Bart McCuin, and Bradley Stiltner accept a donation check from Jeane Love, senior vice president of Centennial Bank in Conway. The donation will be used at ILS’s new facility on Robins Street. An open house will be held for the new building on Feb. 10, 2012.

Newly discovered photos show ILS’s first residents

We’ve stumbled upon several old photographs during our move to our new facility on East Robins Street in Conway. Although all of the photos we have found are great, none carry the same amount of historical significance as the photos below.

These photographs were taken shortly after the first group of men were released from the Arkansas Children’s Colony, now known as the Conway Human Development Center, over 40 years ago. We’re working on scanning and cataloging all of our old photos. Stay tuned for more.

Background
In 1970, Title XIX established, as law, that “everyone has the right to live in the least restrictive environment possible.” Through Title XIX federal funds were distributed to state agencies. It was from those funds that Independent Living Services received its first grant. In less than a year, ILS opened its doors to its first residents.
