Eric Jackson, Direct Support Professional
Waiver • Conway, Arkansas

Eric Jackson’s work began with a consumer during a period of overall staff transition that would be challenging to any new employee. He takes his part-time role seriuosly and he picks up easily where others have left off. He assumes all of the duties of his position and takes responsibility for many that are not a part of his role. Eric is quick to assure that the medical needs of his consumer are met through keen observation and contact with his supervisor. Problems are averted in multiple ways due to his dedication to serve the whole person. The way he manages the needs of his consumer and the way he effectively and efficiently fulfills his responsibilities is well above the level of services I see from someone so new.

Eric should also be commended for the way he continuously builds lasting relationships with his consumer. He is flexible and creative when he deals with a very schedule-driven individual. He plans specific meal nights for his consumer where he makes his favorite foods. He takes care to not only do the things his consumer likes but he does them the way his consumer prefers them to be done. The way he thoughtfully considers what this consumer needs and wants is a testament to his good character and his willingness to make another’s life better. When Eric is met with a challenge or deterrent in his position, he actively makes smart decisions that benefit his consumer. The unique way in wich he devotes a part of himself to his position is apparent in every interaction that I have with him. He is ultimately someone I trust and respect highly in the short time he has filled his position.

Hazel Simpson, Direct Support Professional
Waiver • Conway, Arkansas

I am honored to nominate Hazel Simpson for this award because she is simply an outstanding employee. Hazel was hired on October 6, 2001 and I have yet to need a sub for her. She is always available for her consumer, Kathryn, and she maintains a positive, supportive relationship with her. Hazel prides herself in doing her job effectively, having an attitude of cooperation with everyone she encounters: her consumer, her supervisor and her coworkers.

Hazel’s influence on Kathryn can’t be measured with any value, as she works every day with so much enthusiasm and discipline in performing her duties. Hazel cheerfully encourages Kathryn and she consistently uses new ideas to guide her towards an improved quality of lie. For example, Hazel signed Kathryn up for computer classes as soon as she showed interest in buying a computer. Hazel also took Kathryn with her to the Miss Arkansas Pageant when Hazel’s niece was competing. She won! Hazel and her consumer have a great bond, a mutual respect, and plenty of fun while together. There are very few employeees who can please everyone and completely exceed all expectations while doing so. Hazel is that type of employee. Independent Living Services is so lucky to have her as part of the agency.

Thirty surveys were sent to board members and twenty (20) surveys were returned, which gave us a 66% return rate which was the same as last years. The only concern addressed in the comment section was regarding executive team turnover rate. We will have the nominating committee address this concern during their next meeting. Do you have any other input? Feel like Jackie does a great job. The recent death of a consumer I thought she handled a difficult situation well. I think a great leader, manager and great advocate for all at ILS. Great Work! Board Executive team has not changed in several years. There used to be term limits. Don’t know if this has changed. I love this organization and am proud to be part of it. Best staff ever! You all do a great job! Thank you.
